With services heavily disrupted on the ECML from March until August 1979, due to the collapse of the tunnel roof at Penmanshiel, overnight services used the route via Carlisle from Newcastle in order to reach Edinburgh. Here, approaching Waverley from the west having traveled via Carlisle, 55008 (D9008) "THE GREEN HOWARDS" passes Haymarket with the 1S70 22:15 King’s Cross - Aberdeen on the morning of 15th August 1979. The ECML re-opened to through traffic only five days later on August 20th.
