Deltic supremacy on the ECML finally ended on the 12th May 1979
when 55005 (D9005) "THE PRINCE OF WALES OWN REGIMENT OF
YORKSHIRE" hauled the final loco hauled 1S17 09:00 King's
Cross - Edinburgh service (to Berwick due to Penmanshiel). 55005
worked the service as far as Newcastle and is seen here at York
adorned with a small headboard noting the fact.
However all was not lost for Deltic devotees - as from the 14th
May the re-timed 1D04 17:05 King's Cross - Hull ("Hull
Executive") became, for the next 18 months, the fastest loco
hauled service in the country.
