55016 (D9016) "GORDON HIGHLANDER" prepares to leave Doncaster for the final time during the early hours of Christmas Eve 1981. The previous night 55016 had worked the 1D08 19:40 King's Cross - Hull, her last ever revenue earning service, afterwhich she worked the empty stock as the 5L04 23:30 Hull - York, and is seen here having run-round the stock at Doncaster. 55016 sufferred an exhaust fire whilst powering the 1A08 08:07 York - King's Cross on the 21st December and had to be removed at Peterborough, thereafter she was held at Finsbury Park and restricted to one power unit only. The 1D08 on the 23rd was in fact her first outing following the fire.
